Pedalling Paul

To close off the series of bicycle drawings, in connection with the 101th Tour de France, here are three samples of the series 'Pedalen Paultje' (Pedalling Paul) I made for De Vogelvrije Fietser, bimonthly magazine of the Dutch Cyclist Union ENFB.
The character is an over the top cycle fanatic slash car hater, as will be demonstrated.
Dutch only, sorry!

Total War

Because I missed posting a couple of days of the Tour de France I'll continue my daily bicycle drawings for a bit. Here is yet another one from the archives. Please don't think I've unlearned my techniques, it's just a bit busy at the moment.
Christian-democrat Piet Hein Donner was the Dutch Minister of Justice in one of the most conservative governments we had since World War 2, and at the height of the dreaded 'war on terror'. Abroad he got mainly famous by his bicycle rides to the parliament.
Comic was made for Ravage magazine.

Bikelove

Been posting daily drawings of bicycles during this year's Tour de France, which will finish today in Paris. So here is a small dedication of my love for this means of transportation, fresh from the inkwell, AND an oldie that I made for my comic 'WoordOp!' (Incognito World productions 2003).
As I missed out a couple of days with this project, I'll continue some more after today.
Ride on!

Two Wheels

Two wheels, one thought. Bookcover I made for cyclist/poet Charles Kok. The book was made after him finishing the Hundred Cols Tour.
This is a daily drawing of bicycles during the Tour de France. Which finishes tomorrow, but I'll continue posting a couple more days.

Leontien

I wrote this comic short for an educational book about dieting. It's the story of champion cyclist Leontien Van Moorsel, who during her career suffered from anorexia nervosa. Background information was mainly drawn from her autobiography.
Fit for the daily bicycle drawing, to celebrate the 101th Tour de France.

Tandem

Even in my rare commercial gigs I'll smuggle in bicycles. This was one of a series of 13 cartoons for a company specialized in safety gear. They wanted the samurai as a main actor since the samurai helmet (kabuto) was part of their logo. He turned out quite a nosey and pushy character. Which was OK, the drawings were for internal use.

On The Backseat

During the Tour de France I will post daily bicycle drawings. Today it's time to go in the past again. To the now vanished magazine for the multicultural society Contrast, in which I illustrated the column 'Naima en Lijn' -humoristic accounts of life written by two girlfriends of different descent.
Of course riding the bike was one of them:

Hairdresser 'Bicycle'

During the 90's I worked for Kapperbond FNV, the Dutch hairdressers trade union: illustrating their monthly members magazine, the yearly diaries, leaflets, brochures, posters, xmas cards etc.
One of the items they were keen on was promotion of ergonomic materials in hairdresser's saloons. A shoppingbag with this print on it was part of the campaign.
Kappersfiets, the popular term for a mobile adaptable chair with a saddle as seat to be used while at work, translates best as 'hairdresser bicycle'.
And the slogan made this drawing fit for the bikedraw series in celebration of the Tour de France.

Megavelg

Zone 3 was a biweekly alternative youth magazine made in 'sHertogenbosch and distributed all over the Netherlands in 1984 and 1985. I had a black+white comic page in every edition, and of course cycling was one of the subjects that came along. Megavelg (velg = rim) was published in the penultimate Zone 3.
I'm posting daily bicycle drawings during the 101th Tour de France.

Correct

In the late 90s I created the cartoonpersonality Paultje Korrekt, a slight variation on the term 'political correct', for Contrast ('biweekly for the multicultural society'). This episode is a bit autobiographical, as I ventured those days often through the bustling Kanaalstraat in Utrecht.

Sense of Spring

For a couple of years I had a series about a cat character, Dakhaos (= roofrabbit), in the biweekly city information paper Stadskrant Utrecht. This one's called 'Sense of Spring' and is inspired by the inexplicable urge of local city youth to dump parked bicycles in the canals.

Bicycle vs. Pigeon

During this Tour de France I'm posting daily drawings of bicycles. Today the very first 'Doffer' ('cock-pigeon' or 'more dull') single panel comic I did for the biweekly radical mag Ravage. The series ran from 1999 to 2000.

Outside

Another old bicycle drawing in celebration of the Tour de France. This one from a biweekly series I made for FNV Magazine in 1992 around the Benjamin Croquette character. A Sunday bicycletrip to the countryside...

Utrecht Bicycle City

Cartoons illustrating a paper of the Utrecht branch of the ENFB -currently called De Fietsersbond (cyclist union)- on how to make the city a better place for cyclists (1991). Dug out of the archives in celebration of the 101th Tour de France. I will post daily bicycle drawings up to the finish, July 27.

Dutch Mountains

During the Tour de France this blog will daily feature drawings of bicycles.
This diptych was made for the Dutch bikers union's magazine de Vogelvrije Fietser, February 1990. Inspired by the song In the Dutch Mountains by The Nits.

Draisine

Coming Saturday the 101th Tour de France takes off. I will use the opportunity to publish a drawing of bicyles on this blog every day during the whole event.
Below a comic I did in 2006, for a schoolbook called 'Dossier uitvinders'. About the invention of the draisine.
