Fam. Alias

About twenty years ago the computer entered our house. An older one, previously used for work but still good enough for family things. I wanted to make a series of gags around this, to sell to computer magazines, but stopped after a test sample. As it went those days in my drawing practice I build the comic from the ground up using only digital means (as in: no paper at all), hence the 'jaggies'.
This is the first time it's published...

War of the Worlds

Another noteworthy day: October 30 1938 the radioplay 'War of the Worlds' by Orson Welles (based on the book by H.G.Wells) was broadcasted in the USA and caused an enormous wave of anxiety by listeners, who believed they were truly invaded by the Martians.
I made a little comicstory about the event for the Dutch Dossier-schoolbook series (this one themed 'News'), 10 years ago. Here it is:

The Soul of Kiel (22)

From November 1 to 22 I will be having an exhibition of my Kiel drawings in the restaurant of Traum GmbH in Kiel. The event is hosted by my colleagues of Pure Fruit, who also take care of all the printed materials. Like this pcture, which is featured on a banner in the room:

No Sense

A little sequence that grew out of a material test (new pencils). When the going gets weird, the weird get going.

Rosa Parks

Today, 24th October 2005, was Rosa Parks' dying day. A good reason to post an old comic about her and her place in history. It was once again written for the Dutch 'Dossier'-schoolbookseries, this particular one themed 'discrimination' (obviously) and published in 2006.

Faust

To tangle with the Classics is always rewarding.
Take Goethe's Faust: the closest I ever got to this as an artist publication was the cover illustration of Michel Butor's Impressions diaboliques ('à partir des lithographies de Delacroix, accompagnées de dix-sept lothographis imaginaires pour le Second Faust') in 2008:

Then, yesterday I jotted down this, undoubtedly a result of hours and hours chewing on my Soul of Kiel-project (see earlier posts). Why the hell only two souls, I wondered?

Which lead to a little comic sidestep today. Enjoy!

Child Slave

The Indian children's rights activist Kailash Satyarthi winning the Nobel Peace Prize 2014 made me remember a comic on the same issue, child labour, I wrote 11 years ago. Kindslaaf ('Child Slave') was published in Dossier Kinderarbeid (ed. Kwintessens Uitgevers 2003), a schoolbook for ± 12-year olds. It's based on the biography of the young and now deceased Pakistani activist Iqbal Masih.
Hope the story is clear without knowing Dutch.
