Last week Dutch (and Utrecht) illustrator
Dick Bruna announced to
stop drawing. A good reason to dig out two drawings of mine for Utrechts Nieuwsblad and AD, in celebration of resp. Nijntje/Miffy's 50th birthday, and Bruna's 80th.
For the latter several other illustrators connected to the newspaper were assigned to make tributes, amongst which Erik Varekamp, Flos Vingerhoeds and Gerrit de Jager. One question they had to answer was about their bond with Bruna. My answer: "I didn't grow up with Miffy, but got to know Bruna through his
Zwarte Beertjes book-covers. I still find this his most inspiring work. Apart from this Dick Bruna is a 'homie', we live and work in the same city".
