Alleen maar moorden / Immer nur Morde

In De Vrije, toen het een maandblad was (1992), illustreerde ik vooral artikelen. In een enkel geval plaatste men wat literatuur, waar ook plaatjes bij moesten. Hier een vertaald kortverhaal van de Zwitserse Helen Meier. Ik was indertijd net aan het digitaal tekenen, gefascineerd door het primitieve van computerpixels en vond dat goed passen. Het leidde tot deze maaksels:

Intermezzo: Pampus 28

Vanwege het begraven van een voormalig collega van het U-blad (Utrechts universiteitsblad) vandaag deze tekening uit de archieven opgedoken. Illustratie bij het wekelijks feuilleton 'Pampus', over een groepje studenten in gelijknamig (fictief) stamcafé. We schrijven 1993. Ik experimenteerde driftig met prehistorische tekensoftware. Het treintje bovenin de tekening is van mijn zoon, toen 9 jaar oud.

Ermines

In the early nineties I published a DIY magazine called Klein ('small'), purely for fun, and distributed it through snailmail to a selected group of friends and others who I thought might be interested. Smallscale in reach and format (A7), and in life... it lasted only 5 editions. I do have a relatively short concentration span and am over-eager to push my creative borders, a constant in my life which isn't handy for building up an oeuvre, I know...
Klein contained 'art trouvé', poetry, information snippets and rough computer graphic experiments. Of which the one below, originally titled 'Hermelijntjes', is an example. Text in it recently translated for international public:

Fam. Alias

About twenty years ago the computer entered our house. An older one, previously used for work but still good enough for family things. I wanted to make a series of gags around this, to sell to computer magazines, but stopped after a test sample. As it went those days in my drawing practice I build the comic from the ground up using only digital means (as in: no paper at all), hence the 'jaggies'.

Pampus

The first computer I owned was a Macintosh LC. I bought it along with a small color monitor and A4 Wacom tablet to further my art in the digital spheres. Practice being the best way to get the knack I almost immediately started delivering digital drawings to my regular commissions. One being the Utrechts Universiteitsblad, aka U-blad, weekly for which I worked from 1975 to 2003.
Following illustrations accompanied the serial 'Pampus' (39 instalments) written by Cor Hospes, the troubled adventures of a student in Utrecht.
